Perlites

Perlites – (CAS 93763-70-3) Supplier in the EU

Overview of Perlites

Perlites are naturally occurring volcanic glass materials that expand when heated to high temperatures. When processed, the material forms expanded perlite, a lightweight, porous substance widely used in construction, horticulture, filtration, and industrial applications. Its excellent insulating, lightweight, and absorbent properties make it a valuable material across multiple industries.

As a trusted supplier in the EU, Forge Chemicals Limited provides high-quality Perlites suitable for industrial, agricultural, and construction uses.

Physical Properties and Characteristics

Appearance: White to light grey granular or powder material

Chemical Composition: Primarily silicon dioxide (SiO₂) with aluminum oxide and trace minerals

CAS Number: 93763-70-3

Density: Very low bulk density after expansion

Solubility: Insoluble in water

Thermal Properties: Excellent thermal insulation and fire resistance

Stability: Chemically inert and stable under normal conditions

Production Methods

Perlites are produced by mining natural volcanic glass ore. The raw perlite is then crushed and heated rapidly to temperatures of approximately 850–900°C. During heating, the water trapped within the ore vaporizes and causes the material to expand up to 20 times its original volume, forming lightweight expanded perlite with a porous structure.

Industrial Applications

Perlites are widely used due to their lightweight, insulating, and absorbent properties. Key applications include:

Construction: Used in lightweight concrete, plaster, insulation boards, and fireproofing materials.

Horticulture and Agriculture: Used as a soil amendment to improve aeration, drainage, and moisture retention in plant growing media.

Filtration: Used as a filter aid in food processing, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and water purification.

Cryogenic Insulation: Applied as insulation in low-temperature storage tanks and industrial systems.

Industrial Fillers: Used as a filler in paints, coatings, plastics, and rubber products.

Safety Information

Handling: Avoid inhaling dust and use proper respiratory protection when necessary.

Storage: Store in a dry environment to prevent moisture contamination.

Disposal: Dispose of according to local environmental and safety regulations.
